AN OLD CRT TV
It is often thought that e-waste is
a special type of waste that should NOT be treated as other types of waste. Others
say so because it is valuable to them, others because they understand that it
could harm the environment and others because they were advised so. We totally
agree that e-waste or electronic waste if you like, is very toxic once you do
not handle it properly or with caution. For example, follow the story below:
AN OLD CRT TV IN SINAH'S HOUSE
Sinah had an old CRT TV in her
house, it was a wedding gift from her best friend in 1983 when she got married
to the love of her life Mboi. She kept the TV as the most precious thing in her
sitting room up until the flat screen TVs were introduced. This sadly meant
that the old, black and white TV was overtaken by technology. Sinah being one
who enjoys advancing with the times, she bought a new TV but kept the old one
on the side of the room for her grand children to play with. What she did not
realize was that he TV had a crack on the screen and there was light, grey
powder that was slowly slinging out.
One day, about five years later,
her son Monit noticed the crack and the powder when his last born son was found
eating licking it off of his hands. He became curious and researched about what
the powder could be. He found out that is was a powder that once it
entered ones body,
it caused a lot of damage including cancer and defects in small children. This
was phosphor powder!
Immediately he discovered this,
Monit was panicking. He booked an appointment with a doctor to have his
children checked the next morning. That night, Monit did not sleep, he kept
tossing and turning, counting hours on the clock until 7am when he woke his
wife up to prepare the kids and headed to hospital. Pacing up and down the
hospital corridors, he waited impatiently and curiously for the test results.
His two children were playing in the play area with his wife. At noon, Dr. Ply,
an old pediatrician called them to his office for the results. His last born
son was found to have traces of phosphor in his blood, and what began was a
marathon of treatments to eliminate the element from his body. A very costly
process that weighed heavily on the family.
